Frankincense, also known as olibanum, comes from trees in the Boswellia genus. There are different ways essential oils relate or affect our bodies. The pharmacological aspect of it is when essential oils enter our bloodstream, chemical changes take place. The oil reacts with enzymes, hormones etc. As for the physiological part, this has something to do with the way oil affects various systems in the body. When they are applied, our senses become either stimulated or sedated. As for the psychological effect, when a particular oil is inhaled, each of us has a different individual response to the aroma.

But using oil as medicine has been with us for ages. The use of essential oils dates back thousands of years. More and more is being discovered about the potency and value of oils. Their unique characteristics work with the body’s chemistry in a very direct way to turn on and off the effects on certain organs and systems as a whole.

Today, we’ll focus on one specific oil called Frankincense. Here are genius reasons why it’s coined as the “King of Oils”:

Skin Care
Frankincense oil is great at reducing the appearance of scars, acne, and wrinkles. These benefits can be gained either by applying the oil topically or inhaling the oil through a diffuser. It also helps with stretch marks. The astringent properties of the oil provide a lifting and tightening effect on the skin. Frankincense facilitates the regeneration of healthy skin cells, which leads to healthier, younger-looking skin, and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Other than that, it also has antiseptic qualities which are natural cures for cuts and wounds.

Emotional Well-Being
It oil improves powers of attention. When you’re having trouble focusing, dragged down by a mix of emotions, simply apply a drop of Frankincense at your temples. Or at the back of your neck to get a relief. We sometimes experience different emotions during the day brought about by a variety of triggers. These may include helplessness, anxiety or even depression. Use the oil twice a day and you’ll start feeling that calmness and instantly help you gain back your focus. Rub a generous amount on the bottom of your feet to help alleviate anxiety and nervousness. If you’re having trouble sleeping, a couple of drops under your tongue each night before bed will do the trick.

Respiratory Aid
Sprinkle a few drops of frankincense oil on a handkerchief and inhale as often as possible. Especially when inhaled using a diffuser, it is great for opening up the lungs and clearing the respiratory tract. Inhaling the oil may also provide relief for asthma, bronchitis, nasal congestion, and more.

It can help eliminate excess fluid from the body and keep the urinary tract running smooth and clear. Acting as a diuretic, it also helps prevent the accumulation of uric acid, which can contribute to conditions such as gout and rheumatoid arthritis. Put 1-2 drops in 8 ounces of pure water and drink. Mix it in a glass, and ensure that it’s 100% pure therapeutic grade oil. Try not to exceed 2 two drops a day.

Oral Health
As mentioned earlier, with its antiseptic qualities, Frankincense is useful in eliminating bacteria from the mouth, preventing bad breath, tooth decay, plaque disease, cavities, and more. The astringent quality of Frankincense also helps support and improve the strength of teeth and gums. Mix with coconut oil and baking soda to make your own natural toothpaste.
